Installing Decorative Laminates on a surface is a tricky business. In fact, it requires lots of patience and calibre. Laminated surfaces exaggerate interiors at both residential and corporate spaces, it enhances the beauty and aesthetic appeal with the availability of a wide range of textures and colours.

Now moving on to the crucial step of surface lamination, when any bubble appear, it not only hampers the beauty of laminate surface but also reduce its longevity. To get rid of it, bubbles should be removed immediately.

Decorative Laminates – You must know why bubbles appear and what precautionary measures should be implemented.

  • Inadequate force – Application of inadequate force from rollers cause trapping of bubbles between the film and image.
  • When rollers are moved fast – Bubbles on the laminate surface also appear during the process of placing material when rollers are moved too fast.
  • Placing wet laminates on the surface – Bubbles appear whenever wet laminates are applied on the surface. Please make sure that laminate is entirely dry after printing.
  • Moisture – Moisture is the destructor especially wood that reacts easily leading to disruption in humidity balance.
  • Bubbles also form when surface lamination is done without using adhesive.

Process 1

This step is applied when a bubble is small. With the help of a hot air gun, heat the area of the bubble for a minute. Once heated, press the area of the bubble in a semi-circular motion with a damp cloth with both hands.

If there is a big bubble, prick the bubble without damaging the laminate using a thin nail. Next, heat the area of the bubble for a minute. Once heated, In the case of a big bubble, take a small, thin nail and pierce it in the bubble to make a hole without damaging the laminate. Now, take the hot air gun and heat the area of the bubble for a minute. Once heated, press the area of the bubble in a semi-circular motion with a damp cloth with both hands.

If the process 1 isn’t effective to eliminate the bubble, you must move on to process 2 with the use of adhesives to get rid of them.

Material required for process 1 – Water, hot air-gun, adhesive, thin and small nail, damp cloth, and a syringe.

Process 2

This process need to be followed when process 1 fails. On the top and bottom of the bubble, make two holes using a small and thin nail. Make a solution of the adhesive by mixing some water. Make two holes, on the top and the bottom of the bubble using the small, thin nails. Fill the syringe with adhesive. Now, with the help of the syringe, fill the top and bottom of the bubble with adhesive from the hole. Now, apply pressure on the bubble with both hands using a damp cloth. The purpose is to pour out excessive adhesive out of the bubble from the bottom. Soon after that, heat the area of the bubble using a hot air-gun. Repeat the process of pressing the bubble area in a semi-circular motion.

Crucial Points to keep in mind

There are many ways to eliminate bubble from laminate surface during installation, but one should take appropriate actions and precautionary measures to prevent them from being created.

  • Before installation, the laminate surface should be free from water and dust.
  • Keep it dry to avoid moisture from being created.
  • On a regular basis, clean it with a dry cloth.

Please Note:

  • Never mix water with adhesive during first installation.
  • Give plenty sum of time for the adhesive to dry entirely.
  • While working to get rid of bubbles, maintain patience.
  • Take a larger area than the area of the bubble while heating the bubble. This process allows laminate to slide to the edge and correct its dimensions.
  • Read the installation manual properly and follow all the instructions properly to avoid the issue of bubbles.
